About Us

The Texas Senior Games, coordinated by the Barshop Jewish Community Center, are a group of spirited competitions whereby senior athletes compete in more than twenty different sports categories, ranging from Pickleball to tennis, track and volleyball, and more. Athletes, including men and women ages fifty and over (by December 31st of the Games year), compete in five-year age increments. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each category.

The Senior Games of San Antonio was first held in the Alamo City in 1990 with 525 athletes participating; it has grown exponentially over the years. In 1992, The Games were officially sanctioned (approved as a qualifying site) by the National Senior Games Association (NSGA) and the Texas Senior Sports Organization (TSSO), providing a safe, technically correct, and fun environment for competition. Twenty years later, in 2013, San Antonio hosted the Texas Senior Games instead of the local San Antonio Games, with over two thousand athletes from across the United States participating. As a result of its great success, San Antonio has hosted the Texas Senior Games every year since 2013.

To make the Games a greater success, hundreds of volunteers from across the area give their time to various individual events throughout the competition. Approximately 400 volunteers, ranging in age from teen to 80+, and clocking in approximately 1,250 hours, work to ensure the Games are run smoothly and efficiently. Volunteer tasks include equipment moving and set-up, medical support, timekeepers, office support, serving refreshments, keeping track of event stats and results, handing out medals, t-shirt and goody bag pick-up, and more. If you are interested in volunteering, visit our volunteer page for more info about how you can get involved.

The City of San Antonio also plays an integral role in the success of the Texas Senior Games. Participating venues span this great city, hotels offer our athletes and their families discounts, and retailers donate supplies needed, making The Games a true community event.
